Braces or Invisalign: which should you choose?

In short: Neither braces nor Invisalign are “better” in the abstract: it depends on your case and what you prioritise. Braces are usually more affordable and give a lot of control in difficult cases; Invisalign wins on aesthetics and comfort because it is almost invisible and you take it out to eat. The price you will see here is a rough market figure; the firm quote is given at the free first visit.

How do they really differ?

Braces are the pieces that are bonded to each tooth and joined by a wire that gradually pulls them into place. You wear them for the whole treatment; they do not come off. Invisalign is a set of transparent trays made to measure that you put in and take out yourself, changing each one every one or two weeks.

The big practical difference: braces are fixed and work on their own; Invisalign depends on you being consistent and wearing the trays for the required hours. If you are forgetful, braces “force you” and that sometimes works in your favour.

Which one shows less?

Invisalign wins hands down here. Being transparent and removable, many people do not even notice you are wearing it, which matters quite a lot if you work with the public or simply do not want to sport a mouthful of wires. Metal braces show; there are ceramic ones (tooth-coloured) that are more discreet but usually cost a bit more. If aesthetics is your priority, see our invisible orthodontics page.

Which is more comfortable?

Invisalign is usually easier to live with day to day: you take it out to eat whatever you want and to brush your teeth normally. Braces rub a little at first, take more skill to brush around and force you to dodge certain hard or sticky foods. On the other hand, with braces you do not have to remember anything: they are on and that is that.

Which costs less?

Generally, metal braces are the cheapest option, and Invisalign sits a bit higher. As a market reference in Bilbao:

OptionRough range
Metal braces2,000 € – 3,500 €
Ceramic braces2,500 € – 4,000 €
Invisalign2,500 € – 5,000 €

These are market figures to give you a sense of it, not the clinic’s prices. The real quote depends on your case and is given at the first visit, which is free. It can almost always be paid in instalments.

Which gives better results?

In most cases, both systems reach a similar result: well-aligned teeth and a correct bite. The difference comes in very complex cases, where the orthodontist sometimes prefers braces because they give more control over difficult movements. But only a professional can decide this by looking at your mouth; this guide is general information and does not replace a diagnosis.

So, what should I choose?

Putting it bluntly: if your priority is that it should not show and that you can take it out, lean towards Invisalign. If you are after the most affordable option, you do not mind the aesthetics, or you want to “forget about” being disciplined, braces do the job perfectly. And in many cases both options are valid, so the final decision is yours with the orthodontist’s advice. You can see the full range of options on our orthodontics page.

The most sensible thing is not to decide based on a table from the internet, but to have your mouth assessed. In Bilbao, the first consultation is free: book an appointment with no obligation and we will tell you what suits you best, with your case in front of us.

Frequently asked questions

Which is cheaper, braces or Invisalign?

As a general rule metal braces are the most affordable option, and Invisalign usually costs a bit more. Even so, the difference varies by case. As a market reference, orthodontics ranges between 2,000 and 5,000 euros; the firm quote is given at the free first visit.

Are the results with Invisalign the same as with braces?

In most cases yes, the results are comparable. In some very complex cases the orthodontist may recommend braces because they give more control. A professional decides this after looking at your mouth.

Which is more comfortable day to day?

Invisalign is usually more comfortable because you take it out to eat and to brush your teeth, and it does not rub as much. Braces require more care when brushing and avoiding certain foods.
