Smile design: what it is and how you see the result before starting

In short: smile design is a way of planning how your smile will look before starting to treat it. Your face, your teeth and your gums are studied, and a preview of the result is created for you to see and comment on. It is then made real with whatever treatments your case requires.

What is a smile design really?

Smile design is not a single treatment, but a way of planning. The idea is simple: before touching your teeth, we think about how we want the whole thing to look and then choose the path to get there.

Instead of going tooth by tooth without a plan, your smile is looked at as a whole: the shape of the teeth, their colour, how they fit with your lips, your face and your gums. It is an approach to cosmetic dentistry that aims for a natural, harmonious result, not a “catalogue” smile that is the same for everyone.

How is a smile planned step by step?

Although each clinic has its own method, the usual approach follows similar logic:

  1. Initial assessment. Your mouth is examined, and there is a conversation about what you would like to change and what is possible in your case.
  2. Gathering data. Photos of your smile and your face, sometimes measurements or records of the mouth.
  3. Design. With that data, the design projects how the smile could look: proportions, shape and colour of the teeth.
  4. Preview. You are shown an approximation of the result so you can give your opinion.
  5. Treatment plan. Once you like the proposal, it is decided which treatments will achieve it.

The important thing is that you take part. It is not something decided for you: your opinion on how you want to look is part of the design.

How can I see the result before starting?

This tends to be the part that surprises people most. There are several ways to get an idea of the “before and after” with no obligation:

  • Simulation with photos or software: on a photo of you, an approximation of how the smile would look is shown.
  • In-mouth trial (mock-up): in some cases a temporary material is placed over your teeth, without grinding them down, so you can see yourself in the mirror with the new shape.

Note: a preview is a guide, not an exact promise. The final result depends on your mouth and the chosen treatment, but it helps enormously to decide calmly and avoid surprises.

With which treatments is it made real?

The design sets the “where to”, and then the “how” is chosen. Depending on your case, it can include one or several of these:

  • Whitening to improve the colour.
  • Veneers in composite or porcelain for shape and colour.
  • Orthodontics if the teeth need to be moved.
  • Sometimes, a gum touch-up to balance the smile.

The good thing about planning it is that everything goes in the same direction, instead of doing isolated things that later do not match.

Who is it suitable for?

Smile design is a good fit if you want to improve your smile but are not sure what to do, if you are going to combine several treatments, or if you simply want to see the plan before committing. It also reassures anyone who is afraid of “not looking good”: that is precisely why it is previewed first.

It is not essential for a small, one-off change, but for improvements involving several teeth it helps a lot to get it right.

Note: this content is for information only and does not replace a consultation or a professional diagnosis. The preview is an approximation; the real result is assessed in person, by seeing your mouth.

Frequently asked questions

Is smile design a treatment or a plan?

It is above all a way of planning. Before touching anything, your face and teeth are studied to design how the smile would look. That is then achieved with treatments such as veneers, whitening or orthodontics, depending on what you need.

Can I see how I will look before starting?

Yes, that is one of its great advantages. With photos, software or an in-mouth trial, an approximate preview of the result is created so that you can give your opinion and it can be adjusted to your taste before the definitive treatment begins.

Is smile design suitable for anyone?

Something can almost always be proposed, but the plan changes a lot from one person to another. Adjusting the colour is not the same as correcting the position of the teeth or gums. That is why everything starts from a personalised assessment.
