Curiosities

Dental myths a lot of people still believe

In short: there are beliefs about teeth that get repeated so often they sound true… but they aren’t. “If it doesn’t hurt, nothing’s wrong”, “the harder you brush the better”, “whitening ruins your enamel”… Here we debunk the most common dental myths, calmly and with what dentistry actually says.

”If it doesn’t hurt, there’s nothing wrong”

This is the most dangerous myth. Cavities and gum disease progress without pain for a long time. By the time it hurts, the problem is usually big. A timely check-up saves you treatments (and money): we see what you can’t feel yet.

”The harder I brush, the cleaner”

False, and counterproductive. Brushing aggressively does not remove more plaque: it wears down the enamel and makes the gums recede. What cleans is the technique and consistency, with a soft brush and gentle movements. Two minutes done well beat thirty rushed seconds.

”Whitening ruins your enamel”

Done at the clinic and supervised, it does not damage the enamel. What can cause trouble is aggressive home kits or using them on your own without control. The difference is in the how, not in whitening itself.

”My gums bleed, better not to touch them”

The opposite is true. Bleeding when you brush is the first sign of gingivitis, and it almost always means that area needs more cleaning, not less. If they bleed, clean well (brush + floss), don’t avoid them. They usually improve in a few days.

”Milk teeth don’t matter because they fall out”

They matter, a lot. They hold the space for the permanent teeth, you need them to chew and speak, and a cavity in a milk tooth hurts and spreads just the same. Caring for them is caring for the adult mouth of the future.

”Sugar-free gum replaces brushing”

It helps, but it doesn’t replace it. Sugar-free gum (with xylitol) boosts saliva and is handy after meals when you can’t brush. But it doesn’t remove plaque: the brush and floss have no substitute.

Frequently asked questions

If a tooth doesn't hurt, is it healthy?

Not necessarily. Cavities and gum disease progress silently and usually don't hurt until the problem is big. That's why regular check-ups catch things in time, before they hurt.

Does brushing harder clean better?

No. Brushing hard does not remove more plaque and it does damage the enamel and make the gums recede. What cleans is the technique and consistency, with a soft brush and gentle movements.

Does teeth whitening ruin the enamel?

Whitening done and supervised by a dentist does not damage the enamel. The problems come from aggressive home kits or using them without control. Done properly, it is safe.
