Fixed or removable dental prosthesis: which to choose?

In short: the fixed prosthesis is anchored (to implants or to other teeth) and you do not take it out: it is the most comfortable and stable, like your own teeth, but it costs more. The removable one is the take-out type, cheaper and less invasive, although less stable. There is no single “best” one: it depends on how many teeth are missing, the bone and your budget.

The two big families

When teeth are missing, there are two ways to replace them:

The fixed prosthesis: the closest thing to your own teeth

You do not take it out and it works practically like natural teeth: you eat with confidence and it does not move. It can go:

It is the most comfortable option, in exchange for a higher price and, sometimes, the need for implants (which requires enough bone).

The removable prosthesis: practical and affordable

It is the classic take-out “denture”. It can be partial (replacing some teeth, resting on the ones that remain) or complete (the whole arch). Its advantages: it is cheaper, less invasive and works in situations where the fixed one is not viable (for example, little bone and no option of implants). In exchange, it is less stable and you have to get used to it. You can find guideline prices in how much a denture costs.

How is it decided?

The main factors are:

  • How many teeth are missing and where.
  • The bone available (key if implants are being considered).
  • The budget and your priorities (comfort vs cost).

Sometimes the best solution is a mix or done in phases. That is why the honest thing is to study your mouth before recommending anything. We look at this on the dental prosthesis page.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between a fixed and a removable prosthesis?

The fixed one is held on implants or on other teeth and you do not take it out (it works like your own teeth). The removable one is the take-out type, you take it out to clean it. The fixed one is more comfortable and stable; the removable one is cheaper and less invasive. Which one suits you depends on your case and budget.

Is a fixed or a removable prosthesis better?

There is no outright better one. The fixed one gives more comfort and security when eating, but it costs more. The removable one is more affordable and adapts to more situations, although it is less stable. The decision depends on how many teeth are missing, on the bone and on the budget.

Does a fixed prosthesis always need implants?

Not always. It can go on implants or, if there are healthy teeth alongside, be held on to them (a bridge). A full fixed prosthesis for the whole mouth does usually rest on implants. The dentist assesses this according to the teeth you have.
