In-clinic whitening vs home kits: which one works?

In short: shop-bought home kits whiten little and unevenly, and some aggressive ones can damage gums and enamel. Professional whitening —in the clinic or at home but prescribed by the dentist— gives a greater, more uniform and safer result, because it uses the right product, custom-made trays and a prior examination. “Whitening at home on your own” is not the same as “whitening at home with your dentist”.

Why do shop kits disappoint?

For two simple reasons:

  • Low concentration. For safety, over-the-counter products contain little active ingredient, so they whiten little.
  • Standard tray. Generic strips or trays do not fit your teeth, the gel spreads unevenly and they whiten patchily (some areas yes, some areas no).

Will you notice something? Maybe. The result of a professional? Nowhere near. And watch out for very strong internet kits: that is where gum problems and sensitivity appear.

What does professional whitening offer?

The difference is not just “more power”, it is control:

Shop-bought home kitProfessional whitening
PowerLowHigh (clinic) / medium (prescribed home use)
FitGeneric trayCustom-made tray
Prior examinationNoYes (rules out decay/gum issues)
ResultLimited, unevenGreater and uniform
SafetyVariableHigh, supervised

That prior examination is key: whitening over tooth decay or a diseased gum is asking for trouble. That is why, at the clinic, we first look at the mouth and, often, a dental cleaning already improves the starting shade. You can find the prices in how much a whitening costs in Bilbao.

”Home whitening”, but the good kind

There is a very popular intermediate option: the dentist makes you custom-made trays and gives you the right gel so you can whiten at home over a few days, at your own pace, but with everything under control. That does work and is safe, because it combines the comfort of home with professional judgement. It has nothing to do with a supermarket kit.

An honest note about the result

Whitening lightens the natural tooth, not crowns, veneers or fillings. And it does not turn teeth into an impossible “advert white”: it aims for a natural, bright shade. If your stains are of another kind (internal, caused by antibiotics, etc.), the solution might be veneers; we cover this in stains on the teeth.

If you want to lighten your smile safely and noticeably, the best thing is to have it assessed in the surgery. The first visit is free. Book an appointment whenever you like.

Frequently asked questions

Do home whitening kits work?

Supermarket or internet kits whiten little and unevenly, because they contain low concentrations and trays that do not fit your mouth. You will notice something, but nowhere near as much as professional whitening. The risk lies in the more aggressive ones, which can damage gums and enamel.

What is the difference with in-clinic whitening?

In-clinic whitening uses more powerful products under professional control, custom-made trays and a prior examination that rules out tooth decay or diseased gums. The result is greater, more uniform and safer.

Is home whitening dangerous?

Kits with very aggressive strips or gels used without supervision can irritate the gums, cause strong sensitivity or whiten unevenly. Home whitening IS safe when the dentist prescribes it with custom-made trays and the right gel.
