Stains on your teeth: why they appear and how to remove them

In short: most stains are external (coffee, tea, wine, tobacco, poor hygiene) and are removed with a cleaning or a whitening treatment. Others are internal, from the tooth itself (antibiotics in childhood, knocks, excess fluoride, age), and those will not go away by whitening from the outside: they usually need veneers. The first step is knowing which type they are.

The two main types of stain

Understanding this saves you money and frustration:

TypeWhere it comes fromUsual solution
ExternalFood, drink, tobacco, tartarCleaning, whitening
InternalAntibiotics, knock, fluoride, ageVeneers or other treatments

The difference is key: an external stain is on the surface and can be removed; an internal one is inside the tooth and cannot be removed by scrubbing or by whitening from the outside.

External stains: the easy ones

These are the most common and the most rewarding to treat. Coffee, tea, red wine and, above all, tobacco gradually stain the enamel, while plaque and tartar darken teeth over time. The solution is usually straightforward:

Internal stains: the misleading ones

This is where the typical mistake happens: spending money on whitening for a stain that is not on the surface. Internal stains come from within: tetracycline-type antibiotics taken in childhood, a knock that “killed” the nerve, excess fluoride (fluorosis) or simply the passing of the years. Whitening from the outside barely touches them.

For these, the cosmetic solution is usually veneers, which cover the tooth with a layer of the desired colour. We cover this in cosmetic dentistry and in do veneers damage your teeth?.

And what about white spots?

Be careful with these, because they can be deceiving. They may be harmless (excess fluoride, developmental marks) or be the start of decay (a demineralisation of the enamel). That is why it is best not to ignore them: a check-up rules out the beginning of decay, which is much easier to treat the sooner it is caught.

The conclusion is always the same: before whitening or treating, have a dentist see what type of stain you have, because each one calls for its own solution. We will assess it for you at the first visit, which is free. Book an appointment whenever you like.

Frequently asked questions

Why do stains appear on teeth?

The most common ones are external, caused by coffee, tea, wine, tobacco and poor hygiene, and they are removed with a cleaning or whitening treatment. Others are internal (from inside the tooth) due to antibiotics in childhood, knocks, excess fluoride or age, and those cannot be removed by whitening from the outside.

Can all stains on teeth be removed?

External ones, yes, with cleaning and whitening. Internal ones cannot be removed by whitening from the outside: they usually need veneers or, depending on the case, other cosmetic treatments. That is why it is best to have a dentist assess which type they are.

Are white spots on teeth a bad sign?

Not always. They can be excess fluoride, an early demineralisation (the start of decay) or after-effects of the tooth's development. Some are treated and others are purely cosmetic. It is worth having them checked to rule out the beginning of decay.
