Metal, sapphire or ceramic braces: which should you choose?

In short: metal braces are the traditional ones: hard-wearing, effective and the cheapest, but they show. Aesthetic braces (ceramic or sapphire) correct just as well and are far less noticeable, in exchange for costing a bit more. The effectiveness is similar; the choice is mostly about aesthetics and budget. And if you want something almost invisible and removable, there is Invisalign.

What types of braces are there?

All braces do the same thing — they are attached to a wire that moves the teeth — but they differ in the material:

Do the aesthetic ones work just as well?

Yes. This is the most common worry and the answer is reassuring: they correct just the same. Sapphire and ceramic move the teeth with the same effectiveness as metal. The real difference is that they show less and cost a little more. You are not “sacrificing results” for aesthetics.

Metal, mind you, does have a point in its favour in very complex cases or in children: it is more hard-wearing and harder to break, and it is usually the most affordable option.

And compared with Invisalign?

Braces (of any type) and invisible orthodontics play in similar leagues, with some nuances:

• Braces: they do not depend on your discipline (they are fixed in place), good for complex cases. More visible (except the aesthetic ones) and they demand more care when eating and cleaning.
• Invisalign: almost invisible and you take it out to eat and brush, but you have to wear it 22 hours a day with discipline.
