Dental crowns and caps: types and which one to choose

In short: a crown (or cap) is a “cap” that covers and protects a badly damaged tooth, restoring its shape and appearance. The most common ones are zirconia (very aesthetic, ideal for visible teeth) and metal-ceramic (cheaper and stronger, good for back teeth). There is no overall best one: it depends on the tooth, the look you want and your budget.

What is a crown for?

When a tooth is too destroyed for a filling —because of huge decay, a fracture or after a root canal—, a normal rebuild will not hold up. The crown embraces it completely, restoring its strength, shape and natural appearance. It is like fitting the tooth with a made-to-measure helmet.

General ranges for the sector. The choice is not “the best material”, but the right one for that tooth.

Which do I choose depending on the tooth?

A simple guide:

  • Front teeth (visible): prioritise aesthetics → zirconia or ceramic, which contain no metal and look natural.
  • Back teeth (lots of force when chewing): prioritise strength → zirconia or metal-ceramic, which hold up well.

If you grind your teeth (bruxism), it is worth mentioning, because the force affects the choice of material and protecting the crown with a splint.

How long do they last and how are they cared for?

Well cared for, crowns last many years. But be careful: the crown does not make the tooth immune. Underneath there is still a living tooth, and at the edge (where it meets the gum) plaque can build up and decay or gum problems can appear. So, with a crown or without one:

Crowns are part of the dental prosthetics solutions that restore function to a tooth that would otherwise be lost. If you need one and are not sure which material suits you, we will explain it for your case at the first visit, which is free. Book an appointment whenever you like.

Frequently asked questions

What is a dental crown or cap?

It is a 'cap' that completely covers a badly damaged or weakened tooth to protect it and restore its shape, function and appearance. It is used, for example, after a root canal or when a tooth has decay or a fracture that is too large for a filling.

Which crown is better: zirconia or metal-ceramic?

Zirconia is very aesthetic (metal-free) and strong, ideal for visible teeth. Metal-ceramic is cheaper and very strong, good for back teeth. There is no overall best one: it depends on the tooth, the look you want and your budget.

How long does a dental crown last?

Well cared for, a crown usually lasts many years (often more than 10-15). Its lifespan depends on hygiene, on whether you grind your teeth and on regular check-ups. The tooth underneath still needs care so that decay does not appear at the edge.
