After a root canal, do I need a crown?
In short: yes, in most cases —especially in back teeth— it is advisable to fit a crown after a root canal. The reason: the root-treated tooth is left more fragile and, without protection, can fracture when chewing. The crown embraces and protects it. In front teeth with plenty of healthy structure, a rebuild is sometimes enough. The dentist decides.
Why is a root-treated tooth left fragile?
For two reasons that add up:
- The root canal removes the tissue inside the tooth, which loses part of its “filling” and becomes more brittle.
- That tooth usually already had a large cavity or a fracture (which is why the nerve became infected), so it arrives at the root canal with little healthy wall.
The result: a weakened structure that, if it takes the full force of chewing without protection, is at risk of breaking.
Why does it matter so much in back teeth?
Because the back teeth are the ones that crush food: they bear an enormous force every time you chew. A front incisor takes hardly any pressure compared with a molar. So:
| Tooth | Crown after a root canal? |
|---|---|
| Back tooth / premolar | Almost always yes |
| Front tooth (with plenty of healthy tooth) | A rebuild is sometimes enough |
What happens if I skip the crown?
Here is the real risk. An unprotected root-treated tooth can fracture, and if it breaks below the gum, often it can no longer be saved: it has to be extracted. In other words, you would lose the tooth and the money for the root canal. The crown is exactly what protects that investment. So, when asking for a root canal quote, it is worth asking about the crown too; we look at it in how much a root canal costs.
Which crown is fitted?
There are several materials (zirconia, metal-ceramic…), each with its own advantages in aesthetics and strength. We look at them in dental crowns and caps. In back teeth strength is prioritised; in visible teeth, aesthetics.
The important idea: the root canal and the crown are a team. Doing the first and forgetting the second is leaving the job half-done. We explain everything, with a quote for the whole thing, at the first visit, which is free. Book an appointment whenever you like.
Frequently asked questions
Why do you need a crown after a root canal?
Because a root-treated tooth is left more fragile: it has lost tissue inside and usually has decay or a large rebuild. The crown embraces it and protects it from fractures, which are the main reason a root-treated tooth is lost, especially in back teeth.
Is a crown always needed after a root canal?
Almost always in back teeth and premolars, which take a lot of force when chewing. In front teeth, if plenty of healthy tooth remains, a rebuild is sometimes enough. The dentist decides based on how much tooth is left.
What happens if I do not get the crown?
The tooth is left exposed to fracturing when you bite. If it breaks below the gum, often it can no longer be saved and has to be extracted, losing the work of the root canal. The crown is what protects that investment.
