Orthodontics

Orthodontics for adults: is it too late at 40 or 50?

In short: no, it is not too late. At 40, at 50 or older, teeth still move if the mouth is healthy. Age is not the problem; what really matters is the condition of your gums and your bone, and that is checked at a first appointment. What’s more, today you have very discreet options to do it without it showing.

Can you really wear orthodontics at 40 or 50?

Yes, and more and more people are doing it. The idea that orthodontics is “a teenage thing” comes from when metal braces were the only thing available. But teeth have no expiry date for moving: as long as you have bone and gums in good condition, they can be repositioned at any age.

What does change over the years is not the possibility, but the starting point. An adult usually arrives with some prior history in the mouth: a missing molar, slightly receded gums, a filling or a crown. None of that prevents orthodontics, but it has to be taken into account before starting. That is why in adults the first check-up is so important.

Why are more and more adults in Bilbao taking the plunge?

For several very down-to-earth reasons. Some do it for aesthetics, because those crowded teeth always bothered them and now they can afford it. Others do it for health: crooked or crowded teeth are harder to clean, build up more plaque and that takes its toll on the gums over time.

And here is an important detail: when there is a gum problem, orthodontics and periodontics go hand in hand. You cannot move a tooth over a diseased gum without first getting it in shape. If the gums bleed or are receded, the first thing is to treat them; only then is moving teeth considered. It is exactly the kind of thing that is checked before giving you a plan.

Braces or something more discreet?

This is the million-dollar question when you are an adult and work face-to-face with the public. The good news is that you have alternatives:

  • Traditional braces: they remain a solid option and often the most affordable one.
  • Invisible orthodontics: clear trays that you change yourself and that are barely visible. For many adults it is the favourite option for exactly that reason.

If you lean more towards discretion, invisible orthodontics is usually the way to go, although not all cases are resolved equally well with aligners. If you want to compare the two options calmly, we look at it in detail in this guide on braces or Invisalign.

How much do orthodontics cost as an adult?

Here we have to be honest: the price depends on your case, on how much needs to be moved and on the type of treatment. As a rough guide only, on the market an orthodontic treatment for adults usually falls within a wide range, which with clear aligners typically goes from around 2.000 to 5.000 € approximately. These are general industry figures, not a quote: your own can only be known after looking at your mouth. Many clinics offer financing to spread it into instalments; you have more on this in the guide on Invisalign: price and financing.

How long will the treatment last?

In adults the bone remodels a little more slowly than in a child, so on average it can take a bit longer. Many cases move between 12 and 24 months, but there are shorter treatments (just cosmetic touch-ups) and longer ones. Straightening a few teeth a little is not the same as reorganising the whole bite.

The key point: the real duration can only be estimated after studying your case, not before.

Is it worth it at this age?

For many people, yes. It is not just a matter of looking better in photos (although that too). Well-positioned teeth are easier to clean, look after your gums in the long term and distribute the force of chewing better. And, let’s be honest, smiling without covering your mouth has its value.

Note: this guide is for information only and does not replace a consultation. Every mouth is a world of its own, and only an in-person check-up can tell you whether orthodontics is for you and which option suits you.

Has the idea been on your mind for a while? There is no rush, but there is no need to keep waiting either. If you want to know whether it is a good idea in your case, write to us with no obligation from the contact page and we will look at it calmly.

Frequently asked questions

Is it too late to have orthodontics at 50?

No. Teeth can be moved at any age as long as the bone and gums are healthy. What matters is not age, but the state of the mouth, something that is assessed with a first check-up.

Do orthodontics take longer in adults than in children?

They usually take a little longer because adult bone remodels more slowly, but the difference depends a lot on each case. Many adult treatments move between 12 and 24 months.

Is wearing orthodontics as an adult very noticeable?

Today there are very discreet options, such as invisible orthodontics with clear aligners, which is barely noticeable in day-to-day life or at work.
